Key Machining Examples:
Pressure Vessels: The heart of any isostatic press, the pressure vessel is typically machined from a single, massive forging of high-strength alloy steel, such as SA-723. Our machining process begins with deep-hole drilling and boring to create the main cavity. This is followed by precision internal turning and honing to achieve an exceptionally smooth surface finish (low Ra value). This flawless internal surface is critical for preventing the formation of micro-cracks that could lead to catastrophic failure under cyclic pressure. Perfect cylindricity and concentricity are maintained throughout the process.
Yoke Frames: These enormous structural components contain the immense axial forces generated by the press. We machine these multi-ton frames on large-scale horizontal boring mills and gantry-type CNC machining centers. Key operations include milling the load-bearing surfaces to achieve exceptional flatness and parallelism, and precisely boring the passages for the tie rods. The accuracy of the yoke frame ensures that forces are distributed evenly across the structure, preventing distortion and maximizing the machine’s fatigue life.
End Closures and Plugs: These components seal the pressure vessel and often house instrumentation and heating element connections. Machining involves precision turning of complex sealing surfaces, milling of ports, and cutting robust, high-strength threads (like buttress or ACME threads) that can withstand the immense end loads. The integrity of the seals and threads is paramount to the safety and functionality of the entire system.
